Kid from Texas Places 3rd in Youth World Fly Fishing Championship

Thompson finished the three days of fishing with 13 points, based on the fish and the size of the fish that he caught, good for the bronze medal.
This week he leaves for Colorado to fish in the America Cup International Tournament in Frisco.

These elitist fly fishing competitions are hilarious. If some of the reel anglers competed--I am talking about pro guides or other fly rod ninjas who spend 250+ days a year on the water--I have a feeling it would be a different ballgame. Think Frank Smethurst, or probably even a lot of unknown guides who fish tough water every day. It's like being champs of the Canadian Football League; you win a trophy but you still know there are NFL teams out there who will dominate you.
None the less, props to the kid for placing well despite the fact that he lives in a state with one trout stream and does most of his trout fishing on summer vacations. The knee pads are absolutely ridiculous, by the way.
Idiots. Most of the people in these competitions are guides and do spend 200+ days on the river. George Daniels and Loren Williams, two adult competitors could seriously kick your ass fly fishing. They are both educators and promoters of the sport. What is so bad about fly fishing competitions? No one is forcing you to compete in them, if someone else wants to who gives a f*ck. Arena football is gay but I don't see anyone getting their panties in a wad.
The knee pads are so you can kneel down in the river on rocks for an extended period of time. In competitions you get to fish a single beat at a time and can't afford to spook fish, so knee pads help with stealth. They are common at competitions.

you do not ruin football by competing in it. thats the only way to play. you ruin fishing by competing vs. other people. you're ignorant if you dont see that
