2. The role of Quint (Robert Shaw) was originally to be played by Lee Marvin, at least if Spielberg had got his way. Marvin turned the offer down, saying he'd 'rather go fishing'.

Another little-known (maybe) fact: Robert Shaw was hammered a decent amount of the time during production. His famous scene where he talks about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis? Oh ya - drunk as a skunk. Apparently he ad-libbed take after take and Spielberg cobbled the scene together in the editing room.
Definitely there are a lot of things that happened that we don't know. Spielberg did a good job with this movie
