fly bug my thoughts completely on this ,why and again why are we always trying to cast so far the only place this can be good is down on the salt flats .We pay way to much attention to casting way out there and the fish are at your feet ! though learning these techniques will help you cast better .but casting accuracy is more important then distance . being able to lay the fly down on the water so it drifts under that bush that is over hanging the river .the industry has focused on distance and has buit rods around that . hook a big fish close and see how fast they break the tippet of that fast action rod .think about that for awhile
I find I can cast pretty far if I put a six ounce pencil weight on the end of my line. And I can do it with one backcast! Though I never seem to catch anything, I do impress my friends.
I will bet a caster this good can put his fly anywhere. Good tips, I have never met a good caster who was not a good fisherman. It takes an extraordinary amount of line control to do this.

Please don't learn how to cast far, we need more people like you on the water...to protect our fish...
I have met plenty of good casters that were poor fishermen, but at the same time I have met plenty of great casters who were. There are many guys out there that enjoy the sport mainly for casting purposes and I don't see a problem with it. At the same time there are good fishermen out there that are piss poor casters, yet catch all the fish.
This guy does a great job with the video and is actually able to explain what he is talking about. I have found that a lot of certified casting instructors are great at doing and not at being able to talk about the dynamics of the cast in a way that can be easily understood. He does a great job at both.
Just because the odds of hooking a fish at such distances are low, does not mean there are times when you want to try. You challenge yourself to what you want to do, not to what always catches you fish. I have seen many steelhead caught on rivers like the Deschutes, Clearwater and Snake with 90-100 foot casts.
Nice video. I assume those of you hating can't cast. I am not saying I am great, but I envy George. I follow his facebook page and judging the amount of fish pics I see of him it doesn't seem like his casting has a negative effect on his fishing.

Distance is not everything, even on a salt flat. The longer the line, the less accuracy and control. I've done a lot of permit fishing lately and the key is finesse and stealth at 50 - 60 feet, not 80. Shoot, my forward haul for an 80 foot cast spooked the fish because of the speed the line traveled through the air.
Also, throw on a 2/0 floating toad and watch how that affects the distance. Again, finesse and stealth are the key.
I can't seem to cast my bobber much beyond 40 feet, should I take some of the split shot off?
