BP's business model throught the 90's was to build profits by sub-contracting key H&S and quality functions. Their record on these two issues is APPALLING in an industry that can afford to get it right.
I'm a Brit, but I hope the US government fines BP in to extinction and bans deep sea drilling.

Things could have been so very, VERY different....

The whole industry is a disgrace as is the governments regulatory authority! An estimated 12,000 barrels a day!!!! No sign of fixing it any time soon, shameful... The worst environmental disaster ever.

It would be great if they got fined which they probably will but to what end? The safety standards are the same as they were in the 70's! As long as these companies are in bed with the MMS it will keep happening. Fining a company that basically controls the west's oil is like giving god a parking ticket. (obviously an exaggeration but you get the idea) Unfortunately we will never ban deep sea drilling we Americans (generalized) are addicted to oil, the same thing went down in Santa Barbra and then the big debate on how to get off foreign oil and oil all together. All we seem to do is talk about it till no one cares and go right back at it till something like this happens, it get politicized with both parties pointing fingers and the problem never gets solved. Until an affordable environmentally safe alternative comes along this will be the norm, its unfortunate and sad but its true. We like it easy, more so now then ever in a world dominated by gizmos and gadgets the idea of getting our hands dirty is appauling to alot of morons out there. So be it, I don't like it but its just the way the cookie crumbles.....
