Man Catches Huge Pike on Cheap Fly Rod

Ivan Keeny landed a potential North American fly record 47-inch, 29.7 pound pike at Smith Lake west of Kalispell on a $21 dollar fly rod.

No indication on what he paid for the reel.

Hardly a record, bigger are landed every year on fly rods in Canada

Yeah, I landed one bigger with my bare hand while I held my fly rod in the other hand. I was also in Canada.

Look at this cracker...that fish would do better in other places than the garage...

April 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDan

... that rod is not even orvis endorsed and costs less than the flies I buy. Could it be that I've been LIED too all these years and the fly fishing equipment biz is just a BIG SCAM????? I think so.

April 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterWHAT? That can't be....

.He'll make a good wall mount, or maybe a nice lamp.

April 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterYou're right Dan

The amount and size of fish you catch is directly proportional to the amount of money you spend in your orvis endorsed fly shop.

I'll say it again....fish don't give a rat's bung hole what you hold in yer hand... their after one thing, food!

April 30, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterdeerhawk

doesnt matter how much a rod cost... it just has to catch fish.... mission accomplished.

His claim for a record is perposterous. His "fishing rod" isn't fit for use a a riding crop; he hasn't proper wading britches or boots; and is that a tin of Foldgers Coffee visible in the background? Rubbish I say. This lad is clearly a fraud.

I don't know what a "riding crop" is, but i love that this fish was caught on a cheap rod. Every time I pay hundreds of dollars for my brand name rods I feel like such a sucker.

This "record," however, is nonsense. Get Barry Reynolds' DVD where they are catching 40 lb. mosters in the 50 inch range on fly rods and letting them go, then tell me this is a record.

Still a nice fish though bud - I say fire your cameraman, get some waders and keep fishing, and let prince Charles eat cake.

Great pike on the fly , but this is like the world record steelhead, or state record Whitefish in Colorado...been bested numerous times but never claimed.

Nice fish Ivan, looks like it would be a great fight on any type of fly rod! Congrats

April 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMofish

April 30, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterjoker status

$150 cedar filled dog bed are delicious.

How is the taxidermist going to fix that bullet hole behind the pec fin?

April 30, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterNam

HAHA! Joker status... Orvis, a joke??? Real educated response idiot..

And as far as this "record" goes... retarded.

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterblake

I wish I caught that fish.

May 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterHillary Clinton

Impossible, rods under $600 don't work...

May 3, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterdave mccoy

buncha haters. pike eat fish. we eat fish. isn't that the same thing? no one ever speaks of declining pike fisheries. bonk away and grab yourself a title if ya do it all the time bigger in Canada. if they'll let you in that is.

I just enjoy everyone bickering with each others comments. Why do we fish? To have fun, to catch fish. Some of us prefer a high performance rod that we can feel every fraction of the line loading,a reel with a drag that wont fail, and a line more expensive then this guys whole rig. I think we all, myself included need to check ourselves, and remember that fly fishing is a brotherhood not a dividing line. C & R and take fishermen, Dry fly purist and streamer fishermen. This maybe the point in his fly fishing career that makes him take the next step, like better gear. WE all grow as anglers, and we all had that cheap rig once. So Nice job Bro!, hopefully you might start thinking catch and release soon, but it's your choice. I do also think that LL Orvis has lost touch with fly fishing. They are more concerned with casual clothing, dog beds, and bomber jackets then fishing now. If you walk into their headquarters in VT, you would never know that they were a Fly angling shop, you have to wade through two huge rooms of what looks like a Eddie Bauer store before you find their gear, which is all great stuff in all fairness. I also receive 4 new catalogs from Orvis this season, not one has had any fly gear in it. I think Orvis markets to that guy who wants to look like a fishermen. We've all seen that guy dressed head to toe in spotless new gear untangling his 6th knot of that hour. I do know many amazing anglers who strongly endorse the product, and I trust their opinion. But I still have chose my gear out of use and application not name brand. I hope that they will one day come back to what they found their roots in, because I think many anglers, western especially have lost faith. Nice Pike!

Was just surfing the web and this came up. What a bunch of nice guys? I was thinking about getting back into fly fishing. Not sure I want to hang around most of you! Geeez, lighten up, its fishing!
