T.U. On the Rise on the OP

Smethurst filmed one of his last episodes as host of T.U.'s On the Rise late last winter here on the OP. Dylan at Skate the Fly has more from behind the scenes  as he rowed the camera boat.

"As most of you may already know, I think anglers that continue to propagate the nymphers vs. swingers bullshit are much too frightened that their man parts resemble Jelly Beans and Vlassic mini pickles, so hopefully this post won’t incite morons to continue bashing the already very, very, very dead horse."

hahahahahaha

good link!

.....that bush league fisherman hosts a TU show. I am not even hating. Just saying it like it is.

October 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterI can't believe....

This is a comment regarding the Skate the Fly post linked below the video. It should be read by all who want to have a pessimistic chuckle:

So much of what you just wrote proves your are pretty much a D-bag. Why would you force a respected guide to do something he didn't want to do? Maybe you should have picked a different guide? Maybe you should learn to fish a gear rod if it is so important to bank a steelhead.....

Do you realize that what you just wrote is a total diss on McCoy? I say that and I don't even know Mccoy personally. I just think as a professional who was hired by TU that he would get more respect than that.

McCoy probably didn't think it mattered if you had a shot of a wild steelhead. The best part of the video was simply the scenery. The catching of the fish and chest beating was the money shot? Really? Really? That was the most important shot?!?

They probably could have banked 10 for this video if they could fish a gear rod. That would make plenty of camera shots for TU but oh it just isn't the same right? It NEEDS to be on a fly rod however it gets done right? So who is the elitist now eh? Who really has the problem with their penile parts eh? Think about that for 10 seconds.

Ultimately, maybe these steelhead don't need more attention or deserve it? Maybe they get too much attention. I sure think they do. This video seems to me is more about angler self obsession and the me-me-my-my think that is rapidly making fly fishing the lamest most despicable past time around. It ain't about the fish you dumb dicks!

The irony is that last time I checked this site is called skate the fly. Wow, now that is some shit.

Frank Smethurst is a naaaasty angler, and from my (very brief) experience, a nice guy. Props for a cool video and not taking the fish out of the water for a hero shot.

Eat more fiber and take a dump. You will feel better and be less of a grump.

McCoy didn't get trashed and the PR he got for being on the show put money in his pocket.

A guide is payed for his services and advice. If it took two days to talk him into bobber fishing I would have got another guide.

McCoy is a passionate angler and devoted steelhead swinger who happens like a lot of us to be trying to bang out a living in the fishing biz. Proud to call him one of my best friends. The bottom line, is that we were proud to help TU put this show together. Nymphing or not, it didn't matter, it was just a good time, and info about how awesome steelhead are and how we need to protect them got put on TV.

PNW Miner.

Your comments are so ridiculous it's mind boggling. You clearly lack the faculty to comprehend what you read in that post. If that is your attempt at "a pessimistic chuckle", you should do everyone a favor and burn your keyboard. Even more disturbing, you thought so much of yourself and your awesome writing skills to copy your response and post it here. That's the part giving me a chuckle.

I didn't think my post was that crazy at all. I know personally about 100 fishermen that would totally agree with it. I was just saying it like it is and making sure you boys would see it.

Many fishermen have chuckles daily when they watch guys desperately trying to catch a steelhead with a fly rod. These guys "nymphing" who look like they are gonna cry if they don't hook up. Why? It totally makes zero sense. If you can pick up a fly rod and go fishing and be happy not hooking up the vast majority of the time than you are ready for fly fishing steelhead otherwise you are just picking up a fly rod for braggers rights which is completely backwards to the meaning of the sport. My recommendation is to pick up a gear rod if you want to hook numbers of fish consistently, but than I suppose you can't brag about it as much so that makes you less special. I understand your logic. Do you?

I love fly fishing as much as anybody else. I just think a lot of these "professional" fly fishermen actually don't get it all. I am damn near positive they don't. You guys are like professional Canadian Football players at an NFL game talking shit.

I wanted to add that those of you who are "disturbed" by my post should take a look in the mirror. It is far more disturbing watching guys who will do whatever it takes to catch an endangered steelhead. Especially when they turn into bitches if they don't. Especially when they scream out loud and pound their chest just when they do.

Miner, No one here cares how you fish, you do what makes you happy and the rest of us will do the same. 99% of flyfishing steelheaders swing and nymph, and sometimes using a bead is actually matching the hatch! Go back and read the first post by Evan! if you're still confused.

Miner:

I understand what you're saying now that you actually take the time to articulate it, instead of just spewing bullshit. I agree with you about being comfortable not catching steelies when you're fly fishing, I've been NOT catching them for years and have loved every second of it, as do most of the fly anglers I know and fish with. It sounds like you've been fishing with total assholes to me.

I don't understand how what you are saying applies to my post or the video at all. No one's crying, no one is talking shit, and the only people "screaming out loud" are people that are just psyched to catch a fish regardless of the technique. Who's bragging? Look through STF, do you see me bragging about stuff? Makes no sense.

I honestly don't gear fish because I don't know anything about it. It looks like fun actually, I just don't know shit about it or anyone that does. Your rant just makes no sense in relation to anything I've said. Good fishing.

If you're so concerned about how people fish why don't you leave your rod in the rig and spend the day educating people on how awesome the swing is. Not only would you get a much needed rude awakening but at the same time you might transform some folks into swingers, thus leaving more buckets open for the rest of us fisherman.
