before all you fools start your hating, let it be known it was the best movie ever. Yes, I am aware it is not about fishing.
Its a lovely, heart warming, family story about a bunch of Montana drunks, you know, the usual. And then one gets beat to death over a gambling debt.
Oh and by the way, they like to fish.

Ok reaper fool, let's really get down to it. It's Norm's pity story about how he did everything right, worked hard, and despite it all, his father never loved Norm as much as Paul the fuck up since Paul could shadow cast like nobody's business. Waaa, poor me.
But....... Its's.............. sniff, sniff.......HONK....................Just so SAD.
And he was just so..........sniff, honk,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, CUTE!!
This was a sentimental movie that used flyfishing as a metaphor. I like it and still watch it, kind of like It's a Wonderful Life. But it created a ff bubble that we still have to deal with. Combined with the dot.com bubble we still have plenty of broke guys with umpteen fly rods and reels in the closet that they bought while they were feeling flush. The Cuban cigars are stale by now. Check ebay for sales. And there still might be a fly shop closing in your neighborhood. On the upside, more room on the stream.
Ya know, maybe you should get this notion that there's something poetic or romantic about fly fishing out of your head. Its just a hobby, not really a sport. The fishing isn't always good. There is no metaphor or symbolism about it. Its just fooling a fish who has a brain the size of a pea in relation to its body into eating something and then fighting for its life. And thats what you enjoy. In some minds that would be considered terribly cruel. And in a way, it is. So forget all the artsy fartsy stuff about it and stop looking at it like some kind of an art form. Its just fishing for god sakes.
Unless you like the image of the fly fishing lifestyle that keeps suckers buying $800 sticks of graphite, $500 titanium reels, $400 waders ..Etc....
The only ones who want to project that image are the retailers who want you to buy that stuff, when in reality you can do the same thing for thousands less
But it's OK with me, keep buying the hype and image and spending the money. I'll still out fish people who've spent 4 times as much as I have
Read the book, yes it was first a great book before it was a good movie. And Reaper, "it's just fishing"? Please.
