July Slab of the Month Entry: North Idaho Bull Trout

Whilst fishing for cutts, Riley Egan spotted a few of these.  A well placed cast with some big fur named "the wrecking ball" landed him in good SOTM company.

serious question. is it illegal to target bulls in Idaho?

July 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterStyles P

"There is no harvest season for bull trout. Any bull trout caught
may not be removed from the water and must be released
immediately."
I can't find the line that I was directed to a couple years ago, but it's not actually even legal to target Bull's in ID. It's a nice fish, but really wish that as an informed angler you'd heed regulations, particularly with a species that is on the brink of being endangered.

I can appreciate this young man's excitement, but it''s is illegal to target bull trout in Idaho. If you catch one unintentionally, it must be released immediately.

Clarification: I made a call, talked to Dave Parrish (Idaho Fish and Game) and while there is no open season on Bull Trout for take, you can in fact target them in a catch and release capacity. I stand corrected, and apologize for my previous post.

I hope you guys / gals that obviously were quick to comment, now come back and be quick to apologize for saying its an illegal catch. This excludes, Jeremy.

Nice fish, but I have to agree a little better eye on how to take the pic will go far in taking good shots w/o spot burning..lol.. not that I kneed or want to know where that is but there are some that would love to know where that it is ....

As a frequent northwest river go'er i was actually aware of the legality of going for this beaut. It would NOT be legal some miles to the east in MT unless you're on the South Fork. My apologies however for the overexposure, in the exitement a number of photos were taken but thanks to Digital programs all were lost but this Pic. For the record, we sat and watched him recover for over an hour and he swam happily back to his home..

I mean wow, the fish is not that big, and I'm sure he was really easy to catch, no biggie as anyone could of caught it. The photo is terrible, the specs on the rotary gerder from the end line is way off, and the exposure contrasting to the lens is just a poor play from behind the camera. As a perfectionist I could go on and on letting you know how to improve your game but you need to learn the hard way as I have.
I'm kidding of course. It is a little ridiculous how quickly people point the finger and try to find fault. I don't get it, does it make people feel better about themselves?
Riley, AWESOME fish and thanks for the picture, well done! If this were me I wouldn't be able to be in the photo. I would be in the bushes cleaning my pants!!!!

I love fly fishing more than anything in the world, but sometimes I just cant handle my fellow fly fishers. Lighten up jerks.

Congrats on an amazing fish man.

Riley, Congrats that is a beautiful fish i'm envious. The holding of the fish is excellent your not holding it to the camera trying to make it look bigger than it is you are also holding it with the dorsal fin vertical so you can really see the colors and depth of the fish. My three suggestions would be kneel down the shots always look better when you get down with the fish it also means they will not fall as far if you lose your grip. The next one is try to find an area that doesn't have such high dynamic range in english have the whole shot including the background either in the sunlight or the shade not both. One last one take a couple of shots with the flash on it would of taken some of the shadow off your face.
Congrats again on a beautiful fish and getting it back to the water healthy

Seriously, you guys are stupid! The only aforementioned problem with the photo was "spot burning," otherwise known as providing too much information to the location of the fish, not the photo itself. Nice photo and turbo slab, Riley.
