California Dreamin

A recent dispatch from Patagonia Fly Fishing Ambassador Mikey Weir.

Just got back from a little mission into a remote canyon here in Nor Cal. I was mostly there to film some climbing but i managed some fishing time too. The river was HUGE but i managed to pull some really nice trout. These two were the highlights. I'm guessing that female was over 12 lbs and the male was over 15. He gave me a nasty bite. I could barley hold him out of the water. I think he's one of the biggest i've ever caught. After that i just put my rod down. That was the trout i've been looking for for years.

Think it's worth a SOM entry?

I think that if those fish are only 12 and 15lbs, Mikey has the longest arms ever on a midget.

Nope, not worthy at all, not worthy.
Ok, maybe just a little...

Nice fish.

Forgive me for my ignorance but are those considered steelhead?

WTF? Speechless and feeling insignificant in northern cali. My shrink is going to hear all about these fish.

not steelhead. just a really big bow and the second is a lahontan cutthroat. AMAZING

"A ton of gratituous stiff arm " Your nutz Silent Night. In my 25 years of fly fishing I have caught many big fish in fresh and salt, but that buck is a very large and very impressive fish. In fact I really would like to know where it was caught but I'm sure that info will never be released. I am slighty confused on the actual species however. It has characteristics of a steelhead and cutthroat. If in fact it is a lahontan cutthroat that was caught in an unspecified river it makes it very special, and it makes me happy that some giants are still in some rivers. The lahontan cutthroat range has been shrunk to almost nothing except for a few places and good old pyramid lake. But Mikey claims it was caught in Northern Califonia which shouldn't have any lahontan cutthroat except for the central/eastern part of the state and of that size again is remarkable. If anyone has any input that can help my confusion it would be greatly appreciated. Thats one thing that has kept me addicted to flyfishing, you can never know it all, and you constantly are learning new things all the time. Remarkable FISH. The hen bow is also nice but it can't touch the Buck whatever the strain is.

Steelhead!

Great grip and grin shots. I'm jealous. Steelhead or trout, I'd sacrifice a nut for a chance to enjoy some fish and weather like that right now. Well played.
