Jack Gartside 1942-2009

We were saddened to learn today that after a long tough fight, Jack Gartside lost his battle with lung cancer. He was in bed resting comfortably, attended by friends, with the first snow of the season falling silently outside.

Jack was probably as much of an iconoclast in the fishing industry as anyone. His fishing techniques (marabou spiders for trout) were controversial as they were effective. He was always kind and willing to share knowledge to me and others at fly fishing shoes or otherwise. He will be remembered by many as one of the great innovators of the sport. RIP
One of the greatest personalities I have ever met. I will never forget watching Jack wow the ladies on the dance floor! THE most influential tier of his age, at least for me and those who had the pleasure of meeting and tying with jack. Many in the great lakes area where I fish dont realize that he is responsible for many of our most effective patterns, namely the sparrow which many have tried to call their own, the gurgler style of top water fly (or any foam backed mouse people actt like they invented), the soft hackle streamer, and the pheasant hopper just to name a few. Jack will continue to inspire and influence fisherman and tiers alike for many many years to come. God bless you Jack, thanks for your guidence and inspiration.
