@deerhawk: I don't think the stool was a Cold War reference, so much as it was part of the character of the lazy, arrogant foreigner who brings his stool with him everywhere because he always has to be comfortable wherever he goes (like that Russian joke about the American who goes hiking in the woods in Russia and after a while stops and asks his companions where the bathroom is).
