Northwest chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association wants gill-net salmon fishing ban on ballot
Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at 12:00AM
“Banning the use of gill nets and tangle nets and using selective gear that allows for the release of wild fish is an effective, achievable way to create a sustainable commercial and recreational fishery for the citizens of Oregon,” said Dave Schamp, chairman of Coastal Conservation Association’s Oregon board of directors and a chief petitioner of the initiative.
The hope is to have the initiative on next November's ballot and the law would not effect tribal fishing.

At least half of the fish over Bonneville (and probably more) are killed non-selectively in Tribal gill nets. At least the commercial tangle nets on the coast have to be checked frequently and any wild fish put in a recovery box for a hopeful release. Don't get me wrong, I don't support any gill net fishing but I think most people in Oregon are clueless as to what's happening with Salmon above Bonneville. The commercial netters at the coast are the "red-headed step children".
what they do around here in nor cal is drop a truck load of hay bails in the river--takes the nets right out ---well actually that was just a dream i had the other night after reading all this new gill net stuff--the natives around here have been abusing the river just as bad as the commercial fishermen---get rid of the dam things--escapement percentages are around ummmm--0. nada one--zilch.. we don't see salmon or steelhead untill nets are pulled after tens times the quota is filled.....every one needs to figure it out----natives are natives---use a dam dip net in back eddies of fast chutes and channels, like they did for thousands of years....duhhh, and white man needs jobs---fil the boat with anglers instead of nets,,, hard work --YES, --oh yah but we like to have it handed to us on a silver platter instead of sweating it out and feeling good about our hard work-----maybe someday things will change----or there will be no fish sooner than we think
