Nov Slab of the Month Entry: Chum Salmon

Jamen (known locally as Chumdog Millionaire) does a grip and grin on our namesake.  Big chum indeed.

If you use a digital camera, shoot in RAW (if supported), crop the image to put emphasis on the fish, and adjust the exposure so the fish's head isn't a blinding white spot. Start with somewhere near 1/3 step under-exposure. Don't be afraid to kneel down and get close to the fish and, if your camera supports auto-bracketing, shoot at least 5 shots in high-speed continuous succession with the aperture value set at no more than 1/2 the focal length value, and then pick the best for us. f/11 is a popular go-to aperture setting for 35mm.

If you use a point-and-click film camera, select a film speed of 200 or less for bright daylight shots. Again, get close to the fish to minimize glare from the reflecting sunlight. If you're paying someone to develop the film and create prints for you, bear in mind that not all photo centers are equal. In my home town, prints from Kinko's are lighter than those from Wal-mart by nearly 2/3 step (laser versus inkjet, perhaps).

It's a picture of a guy with an awesome fish, flyswinger you have no idea who took it or why they would give a damn. Thank you for reading chapter 1 in my basics of photography textbook though...

Yes! That is a pumpkin! I made sure to use a special filter on my point and shoot camera so that the reflection of the pumpkin would be muted! jkjk
