A leaked copy of a draft Angling Management Plan has small business
owners convinced they’re being pushed out of the $100 million angling
industry. The report is part of the Ministry of Environment’s Skeena
Quality Waters Strategy, an initiative to tackle claims of overcrowded
rivers, and general deterioration of “angling experiences” in the
Skeena watershed. But the recommendations put forth leans toward a
lottery-based, limited-day licensing program for non-resident anglers,
a proposal some insist will cut into the tourism industry by more than
50 per cent.
