I Don't Know Where I'm A Gonna Go

Spirit Lake
at the base of Mount St. Helens has been closed to the public since the blew almost 28 years ago. Fish were discovered in the lake in 1993 and sampling has found some rainbow trout the size of steelhead.

Washington State wildlife director Jeff Koenings says he
will talk with U.S. Forest Service leaders in Washington, D.C., two
weeks from now about allowing a very limited trout fishery in Spirit
Lake.

Because of all the debris that was washed into the lake Spirit Lake now sits 200 feet higher than it did pre-eruption.

Amazing! It only took 13 years for fish to come back. I just finished reading about Krakatoa and the science still taking place there 125 years after the big eruption, about re-colonization of plant and animal species. It is amazing what Ma Nature can do left to herself.

While I know the temptation to catch the Forbidden Fish, I think people should let the scientists work and let the lake recover without human stress. They might learn something that can help restoring lakes and streams we've destroyed.

Plus they're right. Logs. Big Logs. Tiny float tube.

Ahem, Rainbows the size of Steelhead? Well, those scrawny little things would probably keel right over if someone put a little ol' hook in them.

Better stay away and let them grow up so the scientists can shock the hell out of them every year or so...
