Wally Vidal comes strong with a 17 lb. Payara caught on the Xingu River in Brazil. No sign of a fly rod in the boat, but whogivesashiat. The beast is worthy.
As to the lack of flyrods, you are right. Although I am an avid flyfisherman, all the payara were caught on spinning gear. During the trip, I caught 37 out of my 104 fish on fly. The species I landed on fly were peacock bass, bicuda, piranha and pacu. BTW, the pacu took a foam hopper after being chumed up with crackers.
