Save the Menhaden

As the book says, the most important fish in the sea, and we're wiping them out.

The Menhaden Coalition is working to reverse three decades of steady declining Menahden numbers.

The Menhaden Coalition was officially formed in 2010. The Coalition recognizes the critical role of menhaden in the ecosystems of the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean. Accordingly, it seeks responsible management of the fishery so that menhaden are present in sufficient quantity to fulfill their ecological role as forage for fish, bird, and mammal predators.

A Fish Oil Story

Paul Greenberg of The NY Times writes an op-ed on the demise of Menhaden and what it means for the rest of the eco-sstem. He references H. Bruce Franklin's book, “The Most Important Fish in the Sea” which is a must read if you care about the future of fishing stocks. As Greenberg points out, it's time to start putting pressure on the administration and the state goverments of Virginia and North Carolina to end the commercial harvest of this important fish.  LINK
