US Forest Service Proposes Controversial and Expensive Photo Permit Rules

The US Forest Service is under fire today after proposing a set of rules that would put strict restrictions on photographers and filmmakers who want to ply their trade in wilderness areas. The rules subject potential projects to an approval process with permits costing as much as $1,500 while fines for breaking the rules would run around $1,000.

The fees seem bit excessive when you consider that grazing on public lands will set you back just $1.35 a head for a month's worth of food. Thanks to the General Mining Act of 1872 a mining claim will run you a whopping $2.50 to $5.00 per acre, the same price it's been since 1872.

The rules are set to be finalized in November, and the Forest Service has put out a request for public comment, which you can respond to here.

Ricoh WG-M1 Waterproof Action Camera

The soon to be released Richo WG-M1 certainly changes the game when it comes to the look of waterproof action cams.

The new camera is waterproof to 32.8 feet (10 meters) without the need for an external housing; it's dust proof, cold proof to 14°F (-10°C), and protected against drops from heights of 6.6 feet (2 meters). Its f/2.8 lens captures images with a 160° field of view—about the same as a 17mm lens on a full-frame camera—but it does narrow to 135° when recording video to allow for electronic shake reduction.

The video is recorded in up to 1080p30 quality with H.264 compression; 60fps is an option at 720p, and it can be set as high as 120fps when shooting standard definition. Still images are captured at 14 megapixels. There's an integrated stereo mic, integrated Wi-Fi, and there's a 1.5-inch LCD built into the body.

The new camera will be available October 10th and will be priced at $299.
