El Guapo in Legends, News, bill mcguire, legends of fly fishing

Not many people can point to a photo of a headhunter kayaking Panama’s Piñas Bay and start his story with, “We were on Zane Grey’s boat ...”

Much of his life is in a museum right now, but Bill McGuire is the real exhibit. The Rock Island resident, 91, never met a sporting trade he couldn’t master. In his prime he was both an expert fisherman and a maker of flycasting gear, a crack hunter and a maker of custom gunstocks, a racecar competitor, a stunt skier, and an all-around outdoorsman.

Wenatchee resident and fly-casting king Bill McGuire's storied life is on display at the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center through February 19th.
