Until the 1840's aristocratic fly tackle was advertised as sporting apparatus. Around 1850 the term subdivided into shooting tackle and fishing tackle and in 1850 Bradford and Anthony was listed in the Boston business directory under the category of fishing tackle. In 1883 the business was sold to partners Dame Stoddard and Kendall and operated under that name until the turn of the century when the company changed it's name to Dame Stoddard Company. In 1920 the partnership ended and the business became known as Stoddard's. (Via: Classic & Antique Fly-Fishing Tackle: A Guide for Collectors & Anglers)
