Big Silver Buck...on the $100 Wog
Late in the season the fly stock pile is dwindling, you get tired of slinging the same old lead, and the Silvers come cruising up river. This is no disinterested Sockeye you will have to line or lazy King that you will have to slam in the face with a flashy titty-tassle to antagonize into a strike, these fish are not only aggressive, but in the right mood they will take your mind back to poppin for bass with there explosive top water takes, but I can't seem to get the boss to send me out any wogs, gotta save inventory for those that are paying the bills. So when a client at camp tips me with a '97 Duckhorn Cabernet, and I proceed to drink this fancy grape juice out of the bottle riverside after camp has quieted, the creative juices get to flowing. When I awake the next morning, lips stained black, I collect a few scrapped flies, a pair of beads, and the cork from the previous evenings night cap and proceed to build, not particularly tie, the $100 Wog prototype. An afternoon later we had some free time to stretch a line and the not so aesthetically pleasing fly brought a few fish up before I could get some steel set. I was happy with moving the fish, but landing them on my 6wt would be challenging, both 8wts were out of commission.
